170 Members in Under Four Months
The AI Foundation has 170 members in less than four months. That is more than two times the members CNCF had in its first six months. In February, 97 new members joined in a single wave. Nalley said joining is a vote of confidence that open source collaboration works. The foundation provides common foundational technology for interoperability across legacy and new systems.
Governance: Boards, Committees, and Project Life Cycle
The foundation operates through a governing board, a technical steering committee, working groups, and projects. The TSC approved a project life cycle with three stages: growth, impact, and emeritus. This allows the foundation to accept new project proposals. Nalley said this was the most requested feature since launch. Projects will be vetted by the TSC. He expects project submissions to move quickly.
Seven Working Groups with 500 Participants
The technical steering committee has stood up seven working groups. They already have 500 participants. The identity and trust working group has 150 members from 66 organizations. Nalley said this group tackles one of the biggest challenges: autonomous agents and how to identify them separately from humans. Working groups address problems larger than any single project.
Submit Projects and Join the Community
Nalley invited attendees to get involved. A QR code leads to the foundation’s Discord. People can participate in working groups, projects like MCP, Goose, and Agents.md, or submit a new project. “Open source works when people participate,” he said. The foundation is just getting started.
