Netlify at Scale: A Decade of Cloud-Native Infrastructure

▶ Watch (0:03)

Netlify serves 12 million developers and deploys roughly 3 million sites per month. The platform launched more than a decade ago on the premise of being the fastest path from code to a URL. Netlify adopted Kubernetes in 2017. Today, more than 300 open source projects use Netlify, collectively triggering over 500 deploys per day and generating around 1 billion requests per month.

From Developer Experience to Agent Experience

▶ Watch (0:58)

Biilmann introduced the concept of AX (agent experience) in January of last year as the holistic experience AI agents have when they are the user of a product or platform. Agents run as simple loops of LLM calls and tools. Infrastructure products are now the tools agents use, and context reaches those agents through documentation sites and published web content. Netlify’s addressable user base shifted from 17 million JavaScript developers to roughly 3 billion people who can use spreadsheets.

Rethinking Infrastructure Products for Agent Users

Most infrastructure products still present human-facing docs and getting started pages. Biilmann points to the Netlify page on kubernetes.io as an example: if developers now start with a coding agent rather than a written guide, that design is wrong. Netlify is building tooling it calls “Netlify specifically for agents.” Biilmann’s challenge to KubeCon attendees: think through what your infrastructure product needs to look like when an agent is the user.

Key Takeaways

  • Biilmann coined AX (agent experience) to describe what AI agents need when using a product or platform.
  • Netlify’s addressable market shifted from 17 million JavaScript developers to 3 billion spreadsheet users through agents.
  • Infrastructure products built for human users today may fail agents that now initiate most development work.
