A Project That Is Growing in Contributions but Shrinking in Reviewers
Kubernetes has over 100,000 contributors and 4.5 million contributions as of March. The reviewer pool is 8,900 people. The org is not growing. Maintainers leave every year and are not replaced at the same rate. With code agents now generating more pull requests, that 8,900 number is under more pressure than ever. SIG Contributor Experience exists partly to fix this by pulling new contributors up through the reviewer and maintainer ladder.
LWKD: One Weekly Newsletter Covering the Entire Project
Jos Burkus started Last Week in Kubernetes Development in 2018 to solve a simple problem: the project is too large to track manually. Every week the newsletter publishes developer news, release schedule updates, a featured PR section highlighting user-facing changes, a KEP of the week, other merged PRs organized by promotion and version updates, and a shoutouts section pulled from the Kubernetes Slack shoutouts channel. GitHub Org Management: 330 Repos, 1,600 Members, and a Security Sprint
The Kubernetes GitHub presence spans 330-plus repos across six managed organizations, with 1,600-plus active and inactive org members tracked in the kubernetes/org GitOps config repo. Between KubeCon NA 2025 and this talk, 100-plus members were added and eight repos were migrated, created, or archived. On Sunday, Priyanka scraped all Kubernetes GitHub orgs, found every non-SHA GitHub Actions usage, and raised PRs to pin everything to SHA. The team is now working with GitHub on day-one and day-two policies to prevent similar issues going forward.
AI Tooling Policy and the Maintainer Burnout Risk
Contributors and maintainers are requesting access to tools like GitHub Copilot, CodeRabbit, and Claude Code. SIG ContribEx wants to enable those integrations with adequate checks so that AI-generated contributions help rather than accelerate burnout. The real concern is that the active reviewer count is well below 8,900. A small number of people carry most of the review load. More AI-generated PRs without more reviewers makes that worse. Policy work is ongoing and the team is coordinating directly with GitHub on guardrails.
Three Paths Into the Project for New Contributors
SIG ContribEx runs three mentoring paths. New Contributor Orientation (NCO) sessions run twice a month and cover project structure, SIG governance, and first-issue opportunities. Kubernetes also participates in Google Summer of Code, LFX Mentorship, and Outreachy. Group mentoring cohorts target active contributors who lack a named approver or reviewer role and need a structured path to get one. Christopher, mentioned by name, started through NCO six to eight months ago and is already on track to become an approver in a ContribEx sub-project.
