The Pirate Box: Off-Grid Wireless File Sharing
The Pirate Box project ran until 2019. It turned a single-board computer (a Raspberry Pi, an old laptop, anything available) into an off-grid wireless access point. The software stack created a local landing page where nearby devices could download files, stream from a media server, or post to a forum that could clear itself hourly. The project shut down partly because modern consumer routers lock out custom firmware like DD-WRT. The hardware concept never needed a router, though, and a modern Pi handles it better.
YunoHost and Project Bookmark: Modern Software Stacks
YunoHost is an installable Debian-based server stack with a pre-built image. Flash it to an SD card, drop it into a Raspberry Pi, and you get Nextcloud, Jellyfin, or Calibre running locally with no internet. Hacker Town member Slug Noodle built Project Bookmark (the Roaming Library) on the same idea: an ESP32 8266 board with a micro SD slot and captive portal web server for under $20. Why Censorship Makes Off-Grid Networks Necessary
Book banning accelerated. Websites get taken down because someone didn’t like the content. YouTube copyright strikes can erase videos permanently unless someone downloaded them first. The Internet Archive went down after a DDoS attack in 2024 and took days to fully recover. Marginalized communities often lack reliable internet access even before censorship enters the picture. A Pirate Box in a backpack can reach those communities with learning materials, health information, and documents, all without touching the public network.
Physical Transport Still Beats Internet Bandwidth
Andrew Tanenbaum’s observation still holds: a station wagon full of tapes beats most internet connections for bulk transfer. Fill a shoebox with 8TB NVMe SSDs in the 2280 form factor (80mm by 22mm) and you have multi-petabyte capacity you can carry by hand. Menes estimates the internet won’t match what he calls FedEx bandwidth or sneakernet bandwidth until roughly 2040. Physical transport has a 14-year head start on raw throughput for large data sets.

Cuba’s “paquete semanal” is roughly 1 terabyte of media and documents assembled weekly and walked around Havana on an external hard drive. Someone with the drive connects to neighbors via USB, shares files, and moves on. In North Korea, western media crosses from China on hard drives and gets copied to thumb drives circulating under Red Star OS’s watermarking. A South African telecom raced a homing pigeon against its ADSL connection over 37 miles. The pigeon delivered a 4GB SD card in 2 hours and 6 minutes. ADSL was at 4%.
