Material Goes All-In on Compose

▶ Watch (0:08)

Kendrick announced the stable release of Material Views 1.14. This is the last Views release. Naomi confirmed the team is transitioning to exclusive support for Jetpack Compose. All effort moves to the Material Compose library. Material 3 experimental APIs will promote to stable in the 1.5 release in the second half of 2026. The team recommends migrating to Compose now.

Expressive Component Expansion: Lists, Search, and Menus

▶ Watch (3:18)

Building on last year’s expressive components, the team introduced two list variants: standard and segmented. Switching to a segmented list requires only one line change. Search received a visual refresh with dedicated slots for navigation icons and actions outside the search bar. Expanded search bars animate between docked and full states. Menus now support submenu motion, gaps, and grouped items with checked parameters that toggle filled icons. A new scroll-based time picker primitive debuts as a tactile input component.

Styles API: Simplified Customization Without Boilerplate

▶ Watch (7:08)

The experimental Styles API will integrate with Material Components to enable deeper customization. Currently, creating a button with a navy blue background that animates to lighter blue on press requires manual state tracking and a custom colors class. Gradient backgrounds during press are impossible with standard Material buttons. With Styles, developers pass a style object that sets these properties directly. Styles skips the composition phase during updates, improving performance.

Adaptive Layouts Meet Navigation 3

▶ Watch (9:07)

The Material Adaptive library now integrates with Navigation 3. Instead of navigating between isolated destinations, the system uses scenes. The list-detail scene strategy examines the back stack entries and screen real estate to decide between a single pane or side-by-side view. Developers tag entries with ListDetailScene.ListPane or ListDetailScene.DetailPane. Predictive back support comes free. Swiping back from a detail view on a foldable dismisses the detail pane while keeping the list active.
