The 1979 Osborne Book of the Future promised moon bases by now, fusion power within 10 to 20 years, robot cars, and machine intelligence running the world. All framed as entirely benign. The Soviet bloc ran similar projections. Post-scarcity was the shared assumption: automation would free people to pursue hobbies while John Maynard Keynes’s 15-hour working week arrived on schedule.
Lewis’s son, born this century, flipped through that 1979 book and asked why books like it no longer exist. That question is the talk’s starting point.
The Future Was for a Minority

China’s Tokamak reactor held nuclear fusion for 1000 continuous seconds in 2025, up from 500 seconds the previous record. Space elevator material science exists now; the gap is social willingness, not physics. Arthur C. Clarke: “We will do it when we stop laughing at the idea.” Artificial compute is approaching 10^17 MIPS, within one order of magnitude of all human brains combined.
The video phone arrived not from telephone companies building video phones but from chat apps adding cameras. Change is gradual, cumulative, and rarely comes from the direction the forecast pointed.
